User-Focused Redesign for a Calgary-Based Construction Company

Overview

To help Light-weight Building Systems Inc. better connect with potential clients, I redesigned and developed their website with a focus on user-centric navigation. By reorganizing the content and simplifying the layout, visitors can now easily understand the company’s core services, areas of expertise, and project portfolio. I also implemented a contact form and newsletter subscription feature to encourage engagement and drive client inquiries.

My Role & Contributions

As the UX/UI Designer, I led the design and development of the new website from discovery to delivery. My contributions included:

  • Stakeholder alignment & content strategy: Ensured all key team members were aligned on goals and site content
  • User-centered UI design: Created intuitive, accessible interfaces focusing on user needs
  • WordPress implementation & CMS customization: Built and tailored the website for easy management and engagement features

Client

Light-weight Building Systems Inc. is a Canadian industry leader specializing in Light Steel Frame (LSF) building design and construction. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, with additional offices in Manitoba and Victoria, British Columbia, the company manages projects across Canada. With a highly experienced leadership team, LBS delivers projects from concept to completion with professionalism, quality, and a strong focus on safety and budget control.

Goals

The goal of the website redesign was to help potential clients quickly understand Light-weight Building Systems Inc.’s services, core strengths, and professional team. In addition to improving the on-screen browsing experience for visitors, the updated site also serves as a practical tool for the company’s leadership and sales team to showcase past projects when meeting with prospective clients in person.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was working with long-form content provided by the client and a large number of past projects they wanted to showcase, not just through a standard image gallery, but with meaningful context. The key issue was how to help potential clients quickly find relevant projects they’re interested in. To address this, it was essential to design a well-structured navigation system and categorize the content in a way that clearly highlights both the company’s services and the details of each project.

Solutions

As the UX/UI Designer, I led the end-to-end design and implementation with the following actions:

  • Facilitated a remote design workshop to align stakeholders on visual direction and gather diverse input on the website’s goals and expectations.
  • Collaborated closely with the Marketing and Sales Associate to clarify content needs and define the site’s purpose.
  • Structured and layered long-form content into clear, digestible sections, ensuring both clarity and accessibility.
  • Standardized the layout for project pages and customized the CMS backend after deeply understanding the project content. This allowed the team to upload and manage projects easily, saving time and maintaining consistency.
  • Integrated newsletter subscription and contact form features to encourage visitor engagement and streamline inquiries.

The visual direction uses small square elements to represent the strength and structure of Light-weight Building Systems Inc., paired with a clean, minimal layout to enhance readability and usability.

I designed the interface using Figma and a component-based design system to ensure scalability and maintainability. The site was then built and customized using WordPress and Elementor, enabling flexible content management without sacrificing design integrity.

Results

The redesigned website significantly improved both readability and usability. Even before launch, it received 95% positive internal feedback. Team members were engaged throughout the process and contributed valuable input, which informed several design iterations.

After launch, the site received positive responses from stakeholders and visitors alike. The clean layout and intuitive navigation made it easier for users to understand the company’s offerings, and employees felt proud to share the site. Most importantly, the site became a practical tool for showcasing past work and capturing leads.
